Set in the heart of Norfolk’s stunning countryside, Little Massingham Manor is more than just a beautiful retreat, it’s a place steeped in history and deeply tied to the county’s heritage. From its striking architecture to the stories of those who lived within its walls, this manor is a key part of Norfolk’s rich past.
Dating back over a century, Little Massingham Manor has been a cornerstone of local life. The village of Little Massingham itself is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, showing its long-standing importance to the region. The manor, built in 1907, was the vision of an American Harley Street surgeon who retired to Norfolk. Its design was inspired by Bixley Hall, with architects Edmund Wimperis and J.R. Best creating a timeless home full of character.
After the surgeon’s passing in 1916 and his son’s in 1919, the property was sold to the Dixon-Spain farming family. During World War II, the manor played its part in history, being used by the Royal Air Force as an officers’ mess. In 1962, it was transformed into a religious retreat by a community of nuns, who cared for it for the next 30 years.
Today, Little Massingham Manor has been carefully restored, offering a perfect blend of historical charm and modern luxury. Now a venue for group retreats, the manor features six beautifully designed bedrooms overlooking its 63 acres of woodland, gardens, and parkland.
